High temperature and high pressure wells refers to those deep wells that have a maximum expected formation pore pressure gradient above 0.8 psi/ft and a bottomhole temperature above 150°C.
The main characteristics of high temperature high pressure drilling differentiating it from conventional drilling operation are as follows:
1. It has higher general requirements in terms of the drill rig and downhole tools.
2. High-quality high-density drilling fluid with good stability and suitability for high temperature and high pressure conditions must be used.
3. A sound well structure design is important.
4. Maintain balanced drilling and good pressure monitoring and control.
5. The range of formation pressure changes is wide, which tends to cause formation pressure sensitive problems.
6. The effects of the formation fluid intruding into the wellbore on drilling fluid performance and well quality must be given great attention and dealt with appropriately.
7. Increased difficulty in regards to well cementing, coring, electric logging, testing, and other operations.
